e-STEAMed Coding Challenge

Colston's, in collaboration with the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists (WCIT), the University of Bristol and the Society of Merchant Venturers (SMV) have organised a competition which aims to inspire young people, aged 9-13, to design and code a product that promotes economic or environmental efficiency in Bristol.

The eSTEAMed challenge will encourage young people to collaborate and explore how they can use their digital skills to solve real-world problems.  Teams of 2-4 pupils will design and code a product which could take any form: it might be an App; a web site; a game; a peice of wearable technology.  Teams can call upon support from Code Club and ambassadors from industry and academia to help them with this challenge.

Entries will be judged by a panel of experts across a range of categories and the winning teams will receive some impressive prizes, generously provided by the WCIT!  The final will take place at a high-profile STEAM Festival on the 28th June, hosted at Colston's school, to which all entrants are invited.  All participants will recieve a certificate recognising their efforts and acheivements.

How to enter

Teams from schools or Code Clubs should register for this competition using the on-line Registration Form.  Registration will be available until the 15th June 2018.  Additional support from the School can also be requested using the on-line form.

Teams will need to submit a two minute video (posted on YouTube) demonstrating their product, using the on-line Submission Form.  Deadline for entries will be the 15th June 2018.  Information about how to create and share a video using YouTube can be found here

School / Codes Clubs are provided with a parental letter / permission form and privacy notices to ensure compliance with GDPR.

Ideas for entries

Teams should design and code a product that will help make Bristol more efficient economically or environmentally.  We are keen to encourage creativity and innovation and, as such, teams have complete flexibility in the way they develop their ideas.  Areas of efficiency that might be explored could include:

  • energy management;
  • weather prediction;
  • improvements in farming;
  • improvements in aspects of transport.

The product can be coded in any language, for example, Scratch, HTML or Python. 

Teams might design a Scratch game to promote more efficient route planning, a web site with energy efficiency advice or a Python app that measures local weather conditions.

How will entries be judged?

The Judges will be looking at the inspirational creative process the children have gone through, the design and build process and their plans for marketing the product.

The solutions do not need to be complex!  If the solution is not fully implemented, the entry will still be valid, providing enough design and coding can be shown as to highlight the benefit given.

Entries will be judged using the following criteria:

  • Design and Innovation (25%)
    • Does the product address the theme to 'make Bristol more efficient economically or environmentally'?
    • Is the product accessible for its target audience?
  • Functionality (50%)
    • Does the solution work (even in part) as intended?
    • Is the solution easy to use?
  • Marketing (25%)
    • Is the design and layout visually appealing?
    • How do the team plan to market their product?
    • How effective was the presentation video?

Key dates

  • Registration:  mid-March to 15th June 2018, using the on-line Registration Form.

  • Final and Awards Ceremony:  28th June 2018, as part of the STEAM Festival at Colston's School.
