Colston’s drama department is one of the largest and most successful in the country. The Chief Examiner for AQA Drama uses our pupils’ performances as examples of excellence for other schools and Colston’s drama has been appreciated and experienced throughout the world.
In addition to the extensive expertise offered by the dedicated teaching staff and a full-time technician, pupils have regular opportunities to work with world-class professional theatre practitioners, academics and performers. There are also frequent theatre trips to Bristol, Bath, Cheltenham, London and Stratford, as well as in-house performances by theatre companies from the UK and other countries including Poland, Norway and Japan.
The department enjoys close links with Bristol Old Vic: many pupils have been members of the Bristol Old Vic’s Young Company and have become core members of the Bristol Old Vic’s graduate companies. Our pupils have succeeded in gaining coveted places at top drama schools including LAMDA, ArtsEd, Royal Welsh College, Central School of Speech and Drama, Institute of the Arts Barcelona and Rose Bruford.
Drama is based in the Harry Crook Theatre, which offers an exceptionally well-equipped, 200-seat auditorium for lessons, workshops and performances. Pupils are given the opportunity to study and practise a range of acting styles and genres and also to pursue the entire range of theatre design and technical options. Drama Club and the Technical Club provide weekly opportunities to take part in extra-curricular drama.
Drama is a popular option at GCSE and A-Level and pupils benefit from the wealth of life-skills that drama imparts: group and self-awareness, self-discipline, teamwork, focus, presentation, physical and vocal presence and the ‘confidence without arrogance’ for which Colston’s pupils are rightly celebrated.
