In addition to class music lessons with our dedicated music teacher, a large number of children have individual music lessons with one of our team of peripatetic music teachers.

We love to provide opportunities for the children to perform to an audience and many of our musicians will play in our school assemblies or in concerts for parents. Our annual Christmas concert is one such example where children of all ages celebrate their enjoyment of music. We also organise music workshops where children will participate in additional music activities, such as African Drum Workshops, and gain further experiences as a result. Our workshops and concerts take place in our dedicated music room or the Chatterton Hall.

We have a thriving choir that performs regularly through the year and this includes venues both within and outside the school. In recent years we are very proud that the school choir has performed at the Barbican in the National Schools Choir Competition.

In the approach to Christmas we also sing at Merchants’ Hall in Clifton and perform a range of carols and festive songs. All children also take part in an entertaining House Singing Competition which is keenly contested and judged by an independent musical expert.

Parent Information & Events

Class Music

Music is taught throughout the whole Lower School, from EYFS to Year 6. In Year 1 to 6 lessons are taught for one hour a week. Central lesson topics include classical, world and contemporary music. Every child has the chance to learn an instrument during their time in Colston’s, whether they have individual lessons or not. In class, pupils will learn to play the recorder, keyboard, xylophone and glockenspiel.

Instrumental Lessons

If you would like your child to begin learning an instrument, please download and fill in the Colston’s Music Department instrumental lesson form and return to Miss Chambers by email. Paper copies should be returned to the Lower School office.

The peripatetic instrumental lesson policy outlines our expectations and provides further information.
